Villa Sidonius, designed by Stempel & Tesar architekti and captured in stunning photographs by Filip Šlapal, stands as a remarkable example of modern architecture in Černošice’s villa district. Situated at the northern and western foot of Babka Hill, this area is renowned for its unique family homes. The villa district, dating back to the early twentieth century, houses a mix of Art Nouveau and First Republic villas. After 1989, Černošice became a sought-after location for new showcase residences, contributing to the diversity of architectural styles.

Villa Sidonius, located on one of the steepest plots in the area, offers breathtaking views of the Berounka Valley, the Bohemian Karst hills, and the distant Prague skyline. However, the challenging terrain posed unique obstacles. The plot’s northern orientation results in limited sunlight, while the steep slope makes access difficult. The architects faced the challenge of optimizing these constraints while ensuring easy access to the property.

Their innovative solution was to design the house as a bridge-like structure supported by concrete pillars. This approach maximized the views and sunlight, turning the villa into a modern architectural feat. The structure resembles a steel footbridge that spans the steep terrain, perfectly positioned to take in the northern views and southern sun.

The villa’s steel framework is a combination of prefabricated HEB 300 profiles and IPE 160 profiles. These elements form the load-bearing structure for the windows, roof, and floors, creating a harmonious blend of architecture and technology. The house is both a structural and technological experiment, pushing the limits of conventional design. The architects opted for cutting-edge materials and systems, including Swiss air-lux windows with air-assisted seals and a sophisticated heating and cooling system powered by heat pumps.

Residents enter the house through an underground tunnel that connects to the garage. The tunnel leads to an elevator, which takes them to the main living area. This level includes a cozy living room, kitchen, and dining area, all of which enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The south-facing terrace links the house to the upper garden and swimming pool, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The villa’s unique design extends to the children’s rooms on one side of the “bridge” and the primary bedroom on the opposite end, each offering distinct environments. Collaboration with landscape architect Vladimír Sitta further enriched the project. Sitta’s design of a slate slope with birch trees complements the villa’s modern aesthetic, blending the architecture with the natural surroundings.

Villa Sidonius is the result of a collaborative process involving not only architects but also a large team of specialists and the owner. The owner’s deep involvement in the project had a significant impact on the design and construction, ensuring that the villa embodies both innovation and personalization.

Villa Sidonius is a true masterpiece, showcasing how modern architecture can respond to both the challenges and opportunities presented by its environment. Through a bold and creative approach, Stempel & Tesar architekti have crafted a home that is as functional as it is visually stunning.
