House Sar designed by Werner van der Meulen in Atholl, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Architect Werner van der Meulen has designed House Sar located within the leafy suburb of Athol, Johannesburg.
House Sar encapsulates luxury, comfort, and functionality in a modern and minimalist architectural setting. The client asked the team of Nico van der Meulen Architects to review a single storey pitched roof house. His main request was to transform the existing house into a light-filled open plan contemporary home.
The new architectural design uses a framework of steel columns and beams, which surround the entrance while louvered planes conceal the four garages and floating roofs. The existing tiled roof has been replaced, which resulted in the living area being constantly illuminated. A raised passage roof lets in north light, not only into the passage, but also into the guest bedroom on the south side of the house where an atrium allows morning sun into the bathroom and ventilates the suite safely and naturally. The extensive use of glass, sliding doors, and steel throughout the entire architectural design creates a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor space.
