Art direction, graphic design, illustration, and brand design concept by Oscar Bastidas for Taikin, an Asian restaurant.

Taikin means “fortune” in Japanese, which is closely related to Tanuki, a mythological animal of the Japanese folklore that people usually place in their business and homes to attract good fortune. Tanukis have several special traits that bring good luck, like its hat; worn to protect from trouble and bad weather or a big round belly that symbolizes boldness and decisiveness. The oversized scrotum is a strong symbol of financial luck.

Inspired by this mix of symbolism, Oscar Bastidas has created a beautiful brand identity concept including all illustrations and graphic design elements. The project aims to relate a story about the non-conventional iconographic symbols that are present in the Japanese culture. Just have a look below.
