Branding concept by Hojin Kang for WEST BUND SHANGHAI, a cultural district focusing on art, design, fashion, information, and entertainment.

Hojin Kang, a Berlin based art director and graphic designer was invited to participate in a design competition hosted by West Bund Shanghai, a new cultural district at the Huangpu River. With a focus on art, design, fashion, information, and entertainment, they aim to make the district to a new landmark for Shanghai.

Hojin Kang was tasked to create a visual experience that reflects the history and the vision of West Bund. His concept made it on the shortlist but unfortunately he didn’t win. Anyway, his proposal is a fine example of how to create a visual language, which is simple and iconic at the same time. Furthermore, the bold forms of the originally industrial area have been combined with fresh colors. West Bund is home to museums and events, companies and startups, concerts and parks. To represent the many facets of this area, the right box of the logo is modular. Adapting to the various sub-brands and projects of West Bund, it becomes a logo within a logo, a signage, an interactive platform or a customized canvas for the visitors.
