The skilled architecture team of Khosla Associates has designed a luxurious retreat nestled in the breathtaking landscape of the Sahyadri mountain range in India.
The client asked for a retreat to escape the hectic city life of Mumbai. Situated in the picturesque landscape of the Western Ghats on the backwaters of a lake and surrounded by the Sahyadri mountains, the architects came up with the idea of a single level pavilion, which is divided into two primary zones – one for engagement with breathtaking views over the landscape and the other as a quiet retreat. The more open living spaces provide almost seamless transitions between interior and exterior areas, while the private spaces are more introverted and protected. One of the main challenges was to develop an architectural concept that provides sufficient natural light even for the more sheltered spaces. “To this end, we created a series of dramatic skylights to illuminate the internal spaces evenly.”
The architecture is also characterized by the use of local materials such as black basalt, which was found on the site only 5 to 6 feet below ground. They used the stone to clad up all the exterior walls as well as a few internal accent walls. Just check out the images below. To know more about Khosla Associates, please visit their website.
