In an era where deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation pose escalating threats, companies like Reality Defender are stepping up to safeguard digital integrity. Founded in 2021, Reality Defender has quickly become a frontrunner in the realm of AI detection software, aiming to counteract the dangers of deepfake technology. Recently, the enterprise collaborated with the renowned creative studio Outside, based in Kathmandu, Nepal, to overhaul its branding, website, and web application. This strategic partnership has resulted in a refreshing and human-centric visual identity that sets Reality Defender apart in the tech industry.
Outside’s unique approach to the branding project is grounded in its core value of tech skepticism—advocating for the mindful and ethical use of technology to benefit people and the planet. Rather than drawing inspiration from futuristic or high-tech motifs, Creative Director Rich Stangroom turned to the real world and the individuals Reality Defender seeks to protect. This perspective shift is evident in every aspect of the new brand identity. Please read more below.
The redesigned color palette is a departure from the conventional ‘tech blue,’ embracing earthy, nature-inspired tones of deep green, blue-gray, and yellow-green accents. This choice not only breaks the monotony of typical tech aesthetics but also symbolizes a line of defense against digital threats. Bright white elements are strategically used to create an optimistic and inviting effect, a rarity in the AI and cybersecurity space.
At the heart of the new brand is the Reality Defender logo—a rippling shield that signifies protection against deception and manipulation. The typographic choices, featuring ‘Marfa’ and ‘Public Sans,’ complement the clean and minimalist design of the website, enhancing readability and user experience.
Visual storytelling plays a crucial role in the new brand identity. The website features a diverse array of imagery, including people, nature, technology, and architecture. By focusing on human elements, Outside underscores Reality Defender’s mission to make a positive impact on society. Architectural visuals of solid and intriguing structures evoke trust and integrity, highlighting the monumental significance of safeguarding against AI threats. Nature imagery, on the other hand, fosters a sense of calm and wonder, counteracting the panic often associated with cybersecurity issues.
Reality Defender’s cutting-edge technology employs multiple detection models to analyze audio, text, images, and video for signs of manipulation. This complexity is subtly reflected in the design language through asymmetrical layouts and unique spacing grids, providing a sense of order amidst intricate technology. Yet, the overall user experience is designed to evoke simplicity and relief, rather than overwhelming technical complexity.
“We observed that many competitors in the space adopted a conventional cybersecurity aesthetic, which can induce fear about an unsafe world,” said Vincent Sanchez-Gomez, co-founder of Outside. “We wanted site visitors to feel hopeful about a solution, not fearful of the cause.”
Through this innovative branding project, Outside has successfully infused Reality Defender with a distinctive and approachable identity. The creative studio’s commitment to ethical design and technology shines through, making a compelling case for how thoughtful branding can transform perceptions in the tech industry.
