Shit Mailing: “First Things First” by graphic design and advertising agency Hagelauer.

The corona crisis poses enormous problems for people and companies. Everyone in society is affected, both privately and commercially. The drop in sales is a major concern for companies. Individuals are concerned about family health or fear dismissal. Bulk purchases, especially toilet paper, go through the media and are an expression of fear, even of the most important things in the future to have to do without. The entire society is reflecting on the important things, which is not good news for a graphic design and advertising agency. At some point, the crisis will be over and companies will have to start producing and selling again. Creative ideas are more important than ever to get the best out of the crisis with a tailwind and to pick up the customer directly.

For an advertising agency, it is a tightrope walk. On the one hand the return to essential things, on the other hand, the message that advertising has to be done during and after the crisis. An advertising agency must try to be remembered to be one of the first to help the company rebuild with creative ideas.

German graphic design and advertising agency Hagelauer came up with a creative mailing based on toilet paper printed with the slogan “first things first”. The humorous acknowledgment of the current situation and a card with the message that now is the time for the important things, but after completing the crisis it’s time for the resumption of joint projects. The card shows empty toilet paper rolls that represent the word “SHIT”, an expression of concern about the crisis and a reason for toilet paper bulk purchases.
