Derive: Shanghai’s streets through the lens of Cody Ellingham.

Cody Ellingham, the photographer of ‘Danchi Dreams’ has recently sent me images of his latest wanderings in Shanghai, China. Derive Shanghai is another fascinating photo series of one of the world’s most impressive cities. Whether on a walk through the streets or on the edge of a rooftop overlooking the old colonial architecture mixed with modern buildings, his photographs feel like a journey through time.

Shanghai once was China’s most western city. Today, the decaying buildings of old French and British architecture have to make way for new buildings of a brand new China.

“I came here to capture this machine, this City. The only way to do that is to walk its streets alone. People focus on the new, or the old, but rarely both. A place is not just as it is, but the result of everything that has come before”, Cody said.
