Bill Durgin – Cut Out Collages of Human Bodies

Cut-out collages of human bodies made by American photographer and visual artist Bill Durgin.

Bill Durgin’s photographic work is really unique and the final result differs significantly from the original photo. With a strong focus on the human body, the American photographer and visual artist skillfully plays with our perception. Due to digital extraction as well as replacement and new arrangement of diverse body parts, Bill Durgin creates sculpture-like images. With some major changes in arrangements and diverse manipulations, these images provoke different emotions and interpretations.

Depending on the viewer’s perception, the images can be both adorable and disturbing in some points of view. In addition to the use of self portraits, the artist often works with different male and female models. Party deconstructed, partly rebuilt and intermixed with other objects, his images can be considered as anatomical yet architectural compositions. When working on a new artwork, he usually starts with photographing himself or other people in a staged environment. While shooting, he already pays much attention to the sculptural possibilities of the various parts of the body. The following process is mainly characterized by extraction and deconstruction as well as creating new arrangements. The whole process starting from shooting to image editing is an exploration of the human body in an abstract fusion with the environment.
