The Untitled Space in New York City just announced “hence living, hence magical,” a captivating solo exhibition by Toronto-based artist Katrina Jurjans. Curated by the talented Indira Cesarine, the exhibit opens on June 13, 2024, with an artist reception from 6-8 pm, and will be available for viewing until June 22, 2024. This marks a significant milestone for Jurjans, as it is her debut solo show in the United States and her first collaboration with The Untitled Space.
Katrina Jurjans: A Journey into Dreamlike Narratives
Katrina Jurjans’ artwork delves deep into the realms of emotional and physical spaces, brilliantly bringing her female subjects to life through dense layering of patterns and colors. Her unique style, which intertwines elements of magical realism, explores themes of memory, transition, and the inherent dichotomies of life. Each piece in “hence living, hence magical” reflects her profound engagement with emotional narratives and boundaries—spatial, temporal, and bodily.
Jurjans, primarily a painter, has recently expanded her artistic repertoire to include installations. This exhibition will feature a selection of her mesmerizing acrylic on canvas paintings alongside a site-specific installation, offering viewers an immersive experience into her dream-like world.
A Rising Star in Contemporary Art
Katrina Jurjans graduated with honors from Concordia University in Montreal, earning a BFA in Art History and Studio Art. Her work has received considerable recognition and support from prestigious institutions such as the Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, and Canada Council for the Arts. Jurjans has also been honored with awards from the Toronto Outdoor Art Festival and DesignTO, among others.
