Australian aerial photographer Brad Walls has captured Ballet like never before.
Brad Walls, also known as Bradscanvas, is an award-winning aerial photographer. You may have seen our feature of his Swimming Pools series. Just a few days ago, he has released a brand new body of work titled “ballerine de l’air” (Ballerina from the air), inviting audiences to experience yet another fresh and intimate perspective, this time into the captivating beauty of Ballet.
Brad Walls says that the series is initially inspired by an image by Olive Cotton, “Teacup ballet”. While most people had seen Ballet photographed traditionally, Brad Walls wanted to rewrite the composition by purely focusing on the unique shapes and shadows of this elegant art form.
He contacted Montana Rubin, a member of the corps de ballet (body of the ballet) within the prestigious Australian Ballet. Because of the pandemic, the dancer was not currently performing on stage, nor did she work as usual with the Ballet. Montana Rubin said: “With his clean aesthetic and attention to detail, I was excited to see how our worlds could mesh,” and later she added: “Brad’s unique viewpoint also gave me an opportunity to see my art form quite literally from a different perspective.”
