Selected paintings from the ‘Liminal’ series by artist Yang Cao.
Yang Cao is a talented artist that I recently discovered. He lives and works in Toronto and the main subject of his ‘Liminal’ series is based on people with their heads in the clouds, but that says nothing about the artist himself. With his distinctive style, Yang Cao’s artworks are an exploration of certain emotions while hiding any facial expression behind or inside the clouds. In some images, he omitted entirely to paint the head, just a fluffy cloud is hovering over an empty neck.
His work is undoubtedly characterized by a figurative painting style with a vivid approach. The masterfully painted clouds look fluffy and three-dimensional. The expressions can vary from darkness and hopelessness to absolute joy. Especially the clouds are responsible for the different moods of the paintins. Some were painted very softly with very bright colors. They seem to dissolve while others appear to be very tight and some are small thunderstorms painted with a dark color and a flash. Also the background color as well as the body language of each character has a strong influence on the mood of each image.
Below you can find five examples of different expressions. Feel free and have a look at Yang Cao’s website to see more of his outstanding art. The Toronto based artist has been participated in numerous exhibitions and now you can see some of his paintings here on WE AND THE COLOR.
