Arthouse Gallery Marks 30 Years of Artistic Excellence with a Landmark Exhibition

Arthouse Gallery celebrates its 30th anniversary with a dynamic group exhibition showcasing works by both past and current artists.

Celebrating Three Decades of Cultural Impact
Arthouse Gallery, a cornerstone of Australia’s contemporary art scene, celebrates its 30th anniversary with an extraordinary group exhibition, 30 Years of Arthouse. From December 7 to 21, 2024, the gallery will honor its legacy with works from 20 celebrated artists, showcasing a dynamic range of creative voices that have shaped its illustrious history.

A Legacy of Inclusivity and Artistic Advocacy
Founded in 1994 by Di and Ali Yeldham, Arthouse Gallery began as a vibrant space for emerging artists in a time when inclusive platforms were scarce. Originally housed in a Paddington terrace, the gallery defied the conventional “white cube” aesthetic, opting instead for a home-like ambiance with vividly painted walls. This approach welcomed art enthusiasts of all backgrounds, offering a diverse range of works, from sculpture to furniture design, at accessible price points.

Over time, Arthouse evolved into a cultural hub, praised by The Sydney Morning Herald as one of Sydney’s top cultural destinations by 1995. Its commitment to nurturing talent, particularly women artists, has remained central to its mission. Today, 60% of its represented artists are women, and the gallery achieves equitable value for their works, setting a standard for inclusivity in the arts sector.

Championing Australian and First Nations Art
Arthouse Gallery has consistently elevated Australian and First Nations contemporary art. Collaborations with artists like John Prince Siddon, Rosie Tarku King, Naomi Hobson, and Lydia Balbal, alongside partnerships with arts centers such as Mangkaja Arts and The Hermannsburg Potters, have brought vital cultural narratives to wider audiences.

Under the stewardship of Ali Yeldham, the gallery represents over 40 artists, fostering their careers through year-round exhibitions, workshops, and special projects. This includes collaborations with designers like Ginger & Smart and events curated with Arts-Matter, blending art with fashion and cultural discourse.

A Global and Local Presence
From its early days in Paddington to its current location in a converted wool warehouse at 66 McLachlan Avenue, Darlinghurst, Arthouse Gallery has continued to thrive. The gallery’s new space, surrounded by industrial remnants and burgeoning art precincts, reflects its bold spirit. Over the years, it has gained international acclaim, participating in major art fairs like Sydney Contemporary, Melbourne Art Fair, and holding satellite exhibitions across Asia and Australia.

30 Years of Arthouse: A Celebration of Artistic Milestones
The 30 Years of Arthouse exhibition will feature iconic works by artists including Jo Bertini, Belinda Fox, Clifford How, John Prince Siddon, and Joshua Yeldham. Spanning three decades of creativity, this showcase highlights the gallery’s enduring impact on the Australian art landscape.

This milestone not only honors the gallery’s history but also sets the stage for its future. Ali Yeldham reflects, “Through art, we see ourselves—our cultural voices, our connection to the natural world, and our histories. Art has the power to heal and transform.”

As Arthouse Gallery marks three decades of fostering creativity, it continues to champion diverse voices, create meaningful connections, and enrich Australia’s cultural fabric.
