‘Asylum’ – The eerie atmosphere of abandoned psychiatric hospitals captured by photographer Christopher Payne.
Influenced by a variety of horror movies, old mental hospitals have something very eerie. These massive buildings with corridors and rooms in uniform colors create uncomfortable associations. We think of crazy serial killers or doctors like Josef Mengele who work on cruel experiments with human beings. But fortunately, most of it is just pure fantasy. At least that’s what I hope. For his series with the title ‘Asylum’, photographer Christopher Payne traveled to 30 states within 6 years to visit about 70 abandoned psychiatric hospitals. With his focus on architectural photography, Christopher Payne wanted to capture the imposing buildings that often look like old castle as well as their eerie atmosphere. His photo series documents the decay of these abandoned places. Each picture creates a unique and very eerie atmosphere. They seem to tell stories about everyday life inside the buildings several decades back in time.
