36 Days of Type – all letters and numbers created by James van den Elshout in various 3D illustrative styles.
James van den Elshout is a young designer who lives and works in Sydney, Australia. He recently graduated from Billy Blue College of Design. He’s currently working for design studio Toby & Pete and post-production studio Make Mountains. In 2017, James has decided to participate in the 36 Days of Type. He managed to complete all 36 Days in various 3D illustrative styles.
36 Days of Type is an annual international project that invites designers and illustrators from around the globe to express their unique creations of letters and numbers. Participants are challenged to design a letter or number each day.
James van den Elshout: “This was always going to be a big project for me, as someone who is very reluctant to share everything I make, producing 36 artworks to a standard I’m comfortable with proved to be a challenge. Even though there are some I’m not happy with, overall I am super proud to have finished the series. I wanted to make this a learning project for myself too, to try out different techniques and not do the same thing every day. With the majority of work being made in Cinema 4D and rendered on Octane, I learnt so much more about those tools than I did before. I received such an overwhelming response from friends, family, other designers that I look up to and the whole 36 Days community. This is definitely a project I’d love to do every year.”
