Drawing Through: Selected paintings and drawings by Tad Mike at Thatcher Projects in New York City.
From September 15 – October 22, 2016, Margaret Thatcher Projects presents ‘Drawing Through’, what will be Tad Mike’s debut solo exhibition at the gallery. Visitors of the show can experience a series of large-scale paintings and a selected group of works on paper. Drawing Through features artworks from 2 different series named ‘France’ and ‘Poland’. Quietly intense drawings that underline the ever-changing relationship between nature and humans.
Through the artist’s favored plein air method, the paintings invite visitors to open their minds to the natural world. The artworks shown in the exhibition were made during Mike’s trips to small villages in France and Poland. Through his use of unorthodox materials, the artist wants to underline the ever-changing relationship between nature and humans. If one looks closely at his abstract paintings, the viewer can recognize certain elements such as local vegetation, rocks and other organic objects. Besides some recurring materials such as watercolor, walnut ink, and paper or canvas, the artist likes to experiment with a variety of mediums in response to the different environments. With his work he wants to capture fleeting moments and memories. Whether stones, grasses or the needles of a Hemlock tree, all those objects can become tools that symbolically inscribe certain peculiarities of the different landscapes. In addition to his passion for travel and the outdoors, the artist’s background in music composition has become another strong influence on his artistic style. Similar to the creative process of writing beautifully layered chamber music, Tad Mike has this fascinating ability to infuse his paintings with the mood of each location.
