Identity Design Project for a City in Ukraine

Visual Identity for the city of Ivano-Frankivsk.

Aimbulance is a Kiev based strategic digital agency. They recently sent me a link to this beautiful identity design project for Ivano-Frankivsk, which is a city in Western Ukraine. The agency teamed up with Toronto based graphic designer Jovan Rocanov to accomplish this sophisticated visual identity.

The city of Ivano-Frankivsk has a rich and dynamic history. Goal was to create a design that reflects all the cultural influences and traditions of the city. The new visual identity is significantly inspired by embroidery from the traditional Ukrainian garment. Four different patterns were created, each of them represents a certain influence. The historical pattern is derived from Stanisławów Fortress, an original construction that surrounded Ivano-Frankivsk. Another pattern represents the bartka, a local relic. This pattern refers to the bold ethnographic heritage of the city. The nature pattern is a tribute to the beautiful, natural environment. A last pattern was designed to make reference to the contemporary art and literature  scene in the city.

A range of stationery, communication materials as well as promotional items like t-shirts and cups were produced based on these four patterns.
