German Artist Matthias Bitzer

Eyes on Berlin-based artist Matthias Bitzer.

Matthias Bitzer was born in Stuttgart in 1975. Today he lives and works in Berlin. He studied from 1998 to 2004 at Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe. The German artist specializes across a variety of media including drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, photography, and even sound. Inspired by both history and current affairs, his work refers to different topics. Some of the artworks show his interest for the early 20th century as well as historical figures such as Berthold Brecht, Emily Dickinson, Kurt Weill, Lotte Lenya, and many others. Matthias Bitzer says that he often likes to use portraits of these emblematic figures as a starting point. After further processing in many different ways, his artworks seem to dissolve the boundaries between fiction and reality. Matthias Bitzer combines these portraits with different elements such as geometric patterns or abstract shapes.

Since his early days as an artist, Matthias Bitzer’s work has been shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions both nationally and abroad. The following images give you a glimpse of his creative and versatile work. For further information about this remarkable German artist, feel free and check out his profile on Artsy.
